38 Rotherham College of Arts and Technology Higher Education Prospectus 2010- 2011 Diploma in Teaching in Lifelong Learning Sector The DTLLS diploma forms part of the suite of newly developed teaching qualifi cations to meet the needs of those wishing to teach in the learning and skills sector e. g., further education, adult and community education, work based learning and the voluntary sector. The diploma will enable successful candidates to apply for Qualifi ed Teacher Learning and Skills ( QTLS) status and apply for membership of the Institute for Learning. Participants will need to have at least a level 3 qualifi cation in the subject they wish to teach and as this is an ' in- service' course, have access to a minimum of 150 teaching hours ( with an appropriate age group) over the full duration of the course. The course is provided in two stages over two academic years. Each session is for 4.5 hours including tutorial support. The course operates two intake points- one in January and one in September. Candidates may wish to study this as a two year programme or to complete year 1 of DTLLS and then transfer to the second year of the Cert. Ed./ PGCE depending on teaching status. Modules to be studied The course will cover all of the essentials required to become a qualifi ed teacher in the learning and skills sector. This includes: Planning teaching and learning activities: schemes of work and lesson plans Assessment processes and strategies Teaching strategies and pedagogical practice Creating and selecting resources Principles of learning Contemporary educational issues Refl ective practice Communication skills Inclusive practice Entry requirements For direct entry on to stage 2, candidates need to have completed either City and Guilds 7407 ( stages 1 and 2) or Cert. Ed./ PGCE year 1. All candidates must have a minimum of level 3 in the subject they wish to teach. In addition, you must be competent in literacy. All participants will have the opportunity to undertake a level 2 qualifi cation in literacy as well as numeracy. Applicants are advised to contact their local education authority to enquire about funding support available. Assessment methods The course is assessed via a combination of ongoing written assignments and teaching observations. Candidates need to achieve a minimum of 120 credits to be awarded the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. 50% of the 120 credits must be achieved at Level 5 for candidates to gain certifi cation of the DTLLS. Employment Opportunities Successful achievement of the DTLLS programme will provide the qualifi cation required to apply for QTLS and to apply for membership of the Institute for Learning.
