Foundation Degree in Education and Learning Support This degree is awarded by Sheffi eld Hallam University. The Foundation Degree in Education and Learning Support provides an ideal opportunity for in depth study of all aspects of learning support and will be attractive to those currently working in roles such as teaching assistants, higher level teaching assistants, learning mentors, cover supervisors and other educational support workers. It is also suitable for those who wish to qualify as primary school teachers as it is possible for high achievers to progress on to study the BA ( Honours) with qualifi ed teaching status on successful completion of the course. The degree has been designed in conjunction with employers and professional bodies to meet the growing demand for highly skilled practitioners in learning support across all sectors of the education system. The course is also designed to refl ect the Every Child Matters agenda. Achieving this degree will enhance your professional practice and career prospects. The course is offered on a part time basis over 2 ½ years with the option to study a further 18 months to top up to full degree. Students may also apply to do Qualifi ed Teacher Status ( Primary), which is competitive, requires GCSE English, maths and science and takes about two years. Applicants will have at least 12 months experience and be in regular work ( paid or unpaid) in a learning support role and have the support of their employer. Candidates will also need an appropriate Criminal Records Bureau check. Assessment methods All modules on the programme are continually assessed through assignments, reports, essays, portfolios, presentations and logs/ journals. There are no examinations. Employment opportunities Successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Education and Learning Support may offer progression on to the BA ( Honours) Degree. Students may also apply for a BA ( Honours) Degree with qualifi ed teaching status or post- graduate teacher training courses. These are competitive and students require GCSE English, maths and science in order to be considered. This programme will enhance your professional practice and career prospects at higher level teaching assistant, learning support management/ cover supervisor roles.
