60 Rotherham College of Arts and Technology Higher Education Prospectus 2010- 2011 This degree is awarded by Sheffield Hallam University. The Foundation Degree in Control Technologies is suitable for those working in the engineering industry and want to broaden their skills and knowledge in control technologies. This vocational course gives you the skills and knowledge to become a control and instrumentation engineer, who is able to play a major role in industries employing modern technology. Many industries including food production, printing and also steel, plastics and glass manufacture are increasingly dependent on control systems. The knowledge from this course will allow you to monitor, maintain and upgrade control systems in these and other industries. The course has a flexible approach to learning and is offered on a part- time basis. The course offers a focused approach and includes analysis, design, prototype and testing of control and instrumentation systems and components. Teaching is provided by lecturers who are experts in their field, with practical experience of industry and its development. Modules to be covered You will study the following: . Business and project management . Electrical and electronic principles . Mathematics and engineering science . Investigative project . Programmable logic controllers ( PLCs) . Mathematics and statistics . Networks . Fluid control ( hydraulics and pneumatics) . Supervisory control and data acquisition ( SCADA) . Control and instrumentation . Machine and drives . Industrial project Entry requirements Typically you need a GCSE grade C or above in English and mathematics or an equivalent qualification, plus one from . an A- level pass or two AS level passes in a relevant science or technology subject. . an advanced VCE double award in an appropriate engineering, manufacturing or technology topic. . an EdExcel/ BTEC/ SCOTVEC National Certificate or Diploma in a science or technology- based subject. . a pass in the preparatory year of the Extended Degree Programme in Engineering or another suitable science or technology-based foundation or access course containing an appropriate level of mathematics, with an overall average mark of at least 40 per cent. . an equivalent qualification to any listed above. Assessment methods There is ongoing assessment by coursework, in- class timed assessments and examinations. Employment opportunities Successful completion of this course will boost your career prospects in the steel, plastics, glass, food production, print and power industries. The course also provides the opportunity for further study through progression onto the final year of the BEng ( Honours) Control Technologies or the BSC ( Honours) Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree at Sheffield Hallam University and then onto post- graduate study.
