Earlier this year, students were paid a visit from the " Forensic" team and were given the opportunity to learn how the real- life CSI teams get to work! This began with an introduction to the role of the " SOCO" ( Scene of Crime Offi cer) and the different ways that they investigate a crime scene, examine fi ngerprints and samples, measure blood spatters and collect and protect evidence. The group were then set the challenge to assess several fi ctitious crime scenes which were set up around the College in various locations. This allowed the team to put their new skills into practice and to visualise what a career in forensic science could be like. Applied Science students were able to take advantage of the facilities and equipment at Sheffi eld Hallam University after they attended a number of visits throughout the year. Within the laboratories the group developed their skills and learned new techniques including; blood grouping, organ dissection and also the formation and analysis of paracetamol. The working relationship we have with the University enables our students to familiarise themselves with alternative equipment; helping them to make the most of their college experience. National Diploma in Applied Science student Louise Taylor successfully completed her course and has been accepted into Sheffi eld Hallam University where she will soon be studying Human Biology. Louise thoroughly enjoyed her time at College and told us how she " learned so much and made so many friends." Louise particularly enjoyed the work placement at Hallamshire Hospital which she carried out as part of her course. The hands on experience in cardiology and audiology fuelled her interest in human biology, giving her the motivation to work hard and succeed. She explained there were times when her studies were challenging, but with the " amazing" support from her tutors she was able to achieve her goals. Louise has already recommended her college course to several of her friends in the hope that they can benefi t from the experience she had. our science paidavisitfromthe" Think gation crime scene investigation crime scene investigation crime scene investigation c ene investigation crime scene investigation crime scene investigation crime scene investi ene investigationcstigationc A taster for university Student Success 89 make it happen
